Even in death, a Miata still smiles.

I’m glad that your wife was alright. It’s so easy to not be seen when you’re in a small car, but I would have expected better from a motorcycle rider. You think they’d be more aware of their surroundings.

It also makes me think about that flashing air bag light on the dash of my 94 Miata.

I assume this has been totaled? You ought to snag the hard top off of it. The mount can be fixed, and the hard t op sold to a Spec Miata guy for $1500+.

Damn. I missed the Tuesday post. I’m glad that little car did its job and  she’s okay.

Glad your wife is ok.   Was reading through the other post, did you ask if there was traffic camera footage?   Might help with the insurance if it shows the motorcycle’s involvement.

Not sure. Would I contact the police for that or the local DOT?

removing the hardtop will likely affect the value of the car.

Damn dude, sorry to see this. I know you put a lot of time/energy/money into this car. Ultimately though, glad the wife is safe.

I’d probably start with the DOT, they will probably pull it for you if you ask nicely, or you may need to file a freedom of information request explaining the situation and pay a small fee (usually a few bucks plus the cost of a writable CD). It’s worth a call, as depending on the state, it may be an uninsured claim vs. a collision claim.

ETA: they may need the police to request it, but I’d just call and work your way to a human being politely and they’ll probably walk you through the process

Looks like there’s a camera that was pointed right at it but I’m not sure if it records, and even if it does I doubt the framerate is high enough to be useful. I’ll give them a call though.

They may not push the full framerate online, but they probably have a copy on their traffic control center servers that they can get internally. I’d definitely give them a call if there’s a camera in the area - and you may have to have them look at several cameras in the area, hopefully one caught the incident or the motorcycle approaching/leaving the scene.

That car is thoroughly done.  I’m glad it kept your wife safe.

You might look into buying the salvaged car back from the insurance for cheap. Then part out anything of value yourself, and sell what is left to a boneyard for scrap.

Sheet molding compound is repairable with epoxy, so that top might still be serviceable after a little repair work. The cracked wheel is likely only worth aluminum scrap, but the scuffed ones could be filled and painted. Looks like some of the tires might have value too. Undamaged body panels and doors have a market as well.

A place like The Parts Group ( http://partsgroup.com/ ) might give you an attractive offer on the car since there are a number of components worth salvaging.

...Are the switchblade turn signal LEDs still intact and removable ? Also, I must’ve missed you switching out the stock head unit for that aftermarket one. Do you still have that aux-mod attachment?

Anyway, damn, it sucks that my Miata-twin is no more.  The ‘02 Club just got lonely.  Most important is that all that old safety equipment still did its job, after 1.5 decades of waiting, and kept her safe.

I didn’t check on the switchblades. The housings are pretty mangled and there’s no way to get to the back of them if they are still there. I don’t have the auxmod anymore, though. I got frustrated after having two factory head units in a row bite the dust
